BYD’s sales last year surpassed the $100 billion mark, leapfrogging Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. on revenue, as the Chinese auto giant wows consumers with a range of electric and hybrid cars packed with high-tech features.

Shenzhen-based BYD reported revenue of 777 billion yuan ($107 billion) for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, up 29%, according to a filing late Monday, beating estimates for 766 billion yuan. Tesla’s 2024 revenue was $97.7 billion. The Chinese EV maker’s net income rose 34% year-on-year to 40.3 billion yuan, beating analyst estimates for 39.5 billion yuan.

BYD has risen quickly to the top of China’s car market — the world’s biggest and most competitive in terms of electric vehicles. This year alone, BYD has unveiled a new ecosystem that allows EVs to charge for 400 kilometers in just five minutes and introduced advanced driver assistance technology in even its most basic models. Investors have sent its shares to a record and BYD’s Hong Kong-listed stock is up around 51% this year.

BYD also sells about the same number of EVs as Tesla — 1.76 million in 2024 versus 1.79 million — but, when all of its other passenger hybrid car sales are included, it’s much larger. BYD’s total deliveries last year climbed to 4.27 million, almost as much as Ford Motor Co.
BYD has forecast it can sell between 5 million to 6 million vehicles this year. It’s already off to a strong start, with sales in the first two months of 2025 up 93% year-on-year to 623,300 units.

One area where Tesla still clearly leads however is market valuation. The US carmaker is worth about $800 billion despite a share-price rout that’s seen the stock plunge 38% this year. BYD has a market capitalization closer to $157 billion.

Musk’s EV maker also makes more money on an absolute basis; Tesla’s net income last year was $7.6 billion.

But whereas Tesla is losing in China — shipments have been backsliding there for the past five consecutive months on a year-on-year basis — BYD is winning. China is still far and away BYD’s biggest market, where it commands a share of almost 15%, not just for new-energy vehicles but any sort of passenger car.

BYD doesn’t sell passenger cars in the US yet due to punitive tariffs on made-in-China automobiles, but it’s made big inroads into markets in Europe, places in Asia like Singapore and Thailand, as well as Australia.

Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s chairman and founder, said in a statement the company planned to keep boosting research and development while bolstering its product competitiveness, including in its focus of succeeding outside of China.

He also said that Chinese auto brands in the era of intelligence-led vehicles were no longer merely followers, but rather at the forefront of the trend. They’re “daring” to be first in the world and are collaborating with other domestic brands to go global and move up the value chain, he said.

BNEF's Ryan Fisher reports.

Ibrahim Traore - The New Thomas Sankara & The Man Saving Africa's Natural Resources - In the annals of Burkina Faso's history, a new figure has emerged in the form of Ibrahim Traoré, drawing comparisons to the iconic revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara. Ibrahim Traoré, a once relatively obscure and low-ranking officer in Burkina Faso's military, has swiftly risen to the center of the nation's political stage. In September 2022, Traoré and a group of soldiers successfully executed a coup, overthrowing President Paul-Henri Damiba, and the aftermath of their audacious move is marked by jubilant crowds welcoming Traoré as the self-declared leader.
With an aura of charisma and an agenda that echoes Sankara's ideals of progress and social justice, Traore has been hailed by some as the new torchbearer of Burkina Faso's aspirations. However, the parallels drawn between the two figures also raise questions about the potential impact of Traore's rule on the nation's political landscape and whether he can truly emulate the legacy of the indomitable Thomas Sankara.
During his conversation with Radio France International, Ibrahim Traoré confidently declared that his time in power would be transitory, as a National Conference was on the horizon to appoint a new interim leader before the year's end. Demonstrating his dedication to a smooth transition of power, he emphasized his commitment to honoring an agreement made with West Africa's Regional bloc, which aims to restore civilian rule in Burkina Faso by 2024. Despite these pledges, the future trajectory of the nation remains shrouded in uncertainty, leaving many questioning what lies ahead for Burkina Faso in this crucial period of transition.

Jessica Alupo, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

JESSICA ALUPO, Vice-President of Uganda, said that her country remains committed to Security Council reform, both to make the organ more representative and to “address the historical injustices committed against the people of Africa”, as enshrined in the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration. She also urged the international community to reflect on the United Nations’ original purposes and to work to resolve global insecurity through cooperation, diplomacy and peaceful means. For its part, Uganda continues to work with partners to eliminate terrorism, mistrust and other conditions that undermine development. Further, Kampala remains actively involved in regional initiatives, particularly those of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the East African Community and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. “Our involvement is based on the fundamental values of multilateralism,” she said.

She went on to report that Uganda has received many refugees from within the region. The Government is committed to shouldering its responsibility in addressing the plight of refugees as a “pioneer” of the progressive refugee policy outlined in the comprehensive refugee response framework, she said, calling on Member States and stakeholders to commit to initiatives that advance the sharing of burdens and responsibilities. She also pointed out that her country’s approach to human rights is to respect other people’s values, stating that “we expect others to respect our values, which are deep-rooted in our culture”. As such, human-rights considerations — especially in the face of varying cultural values — should not become the moderating factor in long-term development partnerships. On gender equality, she noted that almost 35 per cent of parliamentary and executive seats are held by women and that Uganda has embarked on poverty-alleviation programmes targeting the participation of women and youth in the economy.

Stressing that climate change continues to undermine all nations’ ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, she expressed concern that countries contributing little to global greenhouse gas emissions continue to be disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. Uganda, for its part, works to increase access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to enhance production and value-addition; to increase forest and wetland cover; and to operationalize climate-smart agriculture. For their part, she called on developed countries to fulfil their commitment, in line with the Paris Agreement, to provide $100 billion — annually, through 2025 — to developing countries to assist with mitigation and adaptation. Also expressing concern over increasing biodiversity loss, she detailed national efforts in response, including restoring degraded wetlands and prosecuting those involved in illegal activities that undermine the preservation of flora and fauna.

She also recalled that the COVID‑19 pandemic presented a multitude of challenges to global health systems and essential health services, which reversed hard-fought health gains and inflicted severe economic hardships — “especially in developing countries like Uganda”. Spotlighting widespread job loss, disrupted supply chains, decreased foreign investment and increased poverty, she underscored that these economic setbacks further exacerbate existing challenges to meeting the 2030 Agenda. However, despite this, Uganda has implemented effective disease-control measures, demonstrated by its swift, successful response to the Ebola outbreak. Adding that South-South cooperation remains a strong element of international cooperation, she said that her country will continue supporting such cooperation and that it looks forward to welcoming the leaders of the “Group of 77” developing countries and China for the Third South Summit in Kampala in January 2024.

In his address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, today (20 Sep) told the Security Council that the “phased withdrawal of MONUSCO is a necessary stage to consolidate progress” that the country has already achieved.

Tshisekedi said, "African peoples often don't understand the equivocal attitude, the double standards at work, the ambiguities, and procrastination of our Organization, especially the Security Council in certain political and security crises, which are rampaging through Africa and sometimes have rampaged there for decades.”

He said, “following a presence of more than two decades by the UN, it's time for my country to fully take its destiny in hand and to become the main protagonist of its own stability.”

Tshisekedi expressed gratitude to the international community and to the United Nations “for their support and their partnership.”

He said it was “illusory and counterproductive to continue to cling to maintaining MONUSCO to reestablish peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to stabilize it.”

Furthermore, he added, “the accelerated withdrawal of MONUSCO is absolutely necessary to ease the tensions between MONUSCO and our citizens.”

The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) was established in 1966 and renamed as the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in 2010.

Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

-------
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “Centuries after the end of the slave trade, decades after the end of the colonial exploitation of Africa’s resources, the people of our continent are once again bearing the cost of the industrialisation and development of the wealthy nations of the world.”

President Ramaphosa today (19 Sep) made his remarks at the High-level week of the General Assembly.

He reiterated, “The wealth of Africa belongs to Africans, the mineral wealth that is beneath the soil of Africa, must in the end accrue to Africans.”

He urged global leaders to “accelerate global decarbonisation while pursuing equality and shared prosperity.”

President Ramaphosa also highlighted, “It is a grave indictment of this international community that we can spend so much money on war, in fact trillions are spending on war, but we cannot support action that needs to be taken to meet the most basic needs of billions of people in the world, needs such as addressing hunger, health, empowering woman and making sure that there is development in countries that are vulnerable.”

He called on wealthier countries to “meet the financial commitments they have made,” adding that “it is a great concern that these wealthier countries have failed to meet their undertakings to mobilise 100 billion dollars a year for developing economies to take climate action.”

Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame said his county “remains committed to working with partners, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to contribute to a durable solution. He was referring to migration crisis, also affecting his county, saying that every year migrants and
refugees undertake dangerous journeys in search of a better future.

Addressing the General Assembly today (20 Sep), Kagame added, “that is part of our promise to leave no one behind.”

According to him, “this week, the International Telecommunications Union, led by Doreen Bogdan-Martin, together with UNDP, also unveiled a major new initiative on inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure.” He added, “Rwanda is very happy to be associated with these efforts, which show the United Nations at its best.”

The Rwandan President also said, “for Rwanda, the source of our solidarity comes from our commitment to never allow a repetition of the tragedy that was inflicted on us, nearly thirty years ago.”

Kagame concluded, “we continue to remain grateful to all who have accompanied us on our journey, as we plan to commemorate the Genocide against the Tutsi for the 30th time in April 2024.”
